New York, New York & Hume, Virginia (March 1, 2015) – FreshKids, an independent food company with a mission to get kids thinking and snacking healthier, announces that the FreshKids Pretzel Stix tray has been accepted into the national school lunch program.
True to its mission to bring real foods to all kids, FreshKids focused initial product development on a whole-grain rich, sodium-reduced pretzel. The company specifically formulated the pretzel stix tray to meet the USDA nutritional standards required to participate in the national school lunch program.
“We founded FreshKids to be part of the movement to get kids healthy, and also join the conversation about childhood nutrition and hunger in America,” shares Susanne Brose, co-founder of FreshKids. “We want to be a solution for schools. We fully support the National School Food Program in this country. It is a national treasure. School cafeterias are getting healthier, and we are honored to serve our pretzels to the Nation’s children.”
FreshKids Whole-Grain and Honey-Kissed Pretzel Stix Tray is USDA compliant to the K-12 competitive food regulations. The FreshKids pretzel tray meets the grain requirement. FreshKids pretzel tray can be served as a menu item for lunch, breakfast, snack or after school meals. It also meets the Smart Snack requirements for vending machine and a la carte service.
FreshKids Pretzel Stix are uniquely formulated with clean, non-GMO ingredients. FreshKids pretzels contain no palm oil, no corn syrup, trans fats or artificial colors or flavors. The pretzels are sweetened with honey. Kids were an important part of the formulation process, as students participated in taste-testing of the pretzel.
“We believe all kids should have access to real, healthful foods, made with clean and simple ingredients,” says Brose. “We sourced the best ingredients for these pretzels. And got kids and moms involved – they help create all FreshKids products.”
FreshKids also created a special rocket-ship poster to display in school cafeterias sharing the campaign message “Healthy is the New Cool”.
“The kids love the pretzel sticks, and they also fit in my vending machines – bonus! And the posters for my schools are great. Thanks to FreshKids for all they do to make us look great and help us do our jobs,” says Jan Hack, School Food Director for Pawling Schools in New York.
